let us remember...that in the end we go to poetry for one reason, so that we might more fully inhabit our lives and the world in which we live them, and that if we more fully inhabit these things, we might be less apt to destroy both.

lighting the smoker...
the hive to be 'reversed'. as the bees eat through the winter, they move up the hive, leaving the bottom box empty. bees don't move back down, so in the spring you want to reverse the hive, putting the bottom box on the top, so they move up into that empty one.
taking off the top box full of eggs.
smoking the bees with just light puffs over the top.
we pulled three frames of worker bees and honey and moved them to an empty hive. now, we are looking for freshly laid eggs to move over to the empty hive. the bees in the new hive will realize they are queenless and make a queen from those freshly laid eggs. if all goes well: voila, two hives from one.
honey in the upper right corner.
capped eggs in the bottom right.
above and to the right of the capped eggs are larva and teeny tiny freshly laid eggs...
the frames in the new hive.
feeding the new hive. then we closed it up and pray!
reversing the winter over-ed hive. taking off the rest of the boxes.
the hive completely broken down and very upset bees.
putting it back together.
these are pictures of my sister's hive being split and reversed.
we did the same with avalon and are hoping for two hives again: avalon and bree.
yay for spring.
